Spring & Autumn

This is a fifteen-day variant on the standard Everest route, taking in Khumjung and Chhukung as well as the main Tengboche-Dingboche-Lobuche line, with the high point a climb to Kala Pattar at 18,225 feet for the full Everest panorama. The variant routing gives an extra acclimatisation stage at Chhukung and avoids the busiest sections of the main trail in the middle of the trek.

A variant on the standard route

From Namche the trail diverges to Khumjung at 12,402 feet for a rest day before rejoining the main route at Tengboche. From Dingboche, the trek heads east to Chhukung at 15,518 feet for a second acclimatisation stop, then back across to Lobuche for the climb to Kala Pattar. The descent follows the standard route back through Panboche and Namche to Lukla.

What it feels like on the ground

Walking days are five to seven hours on the same well-defined Khumbu trails. Lodges across the region are well-established for trekking traffic. Khumjung and Chhukung both see fewer trekkers than the main route villages, which gives the rest days a quieter feel. The pace is deliberately slow above Namche, and the two acclimatisation stops are designed to reduce altitude risk.

Practical notes

Good general fitness is essential. The route reaches 18,225 feet at Kala Pattar, which is significant altitude even with acclimatisation days. Personal travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation is required. The best seasons are autumn (mid-September to late November) and spring (mid-March to late May). Four-season sleeping bag, proper layered clothing, broken-in boots, and walking poles are essential.
