Spring & Autumn

This circuit brings together four very different sides of Nepal in eleven days. Kathmandu provides the cultural opening, Lumbini the spiritual centre as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautam, Pokhara the lakeside calm beneath the Annapurna range, and Chitwan the lowland jungle with its rhinos, Bengal tigers, and crocodiles. Internal flights link the stages so the journey itself never takes more than a morning.

The shape of the route

Two nights in Lumbini allow time for the Mayadevi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar, the sacred pond, and the wider circuit of monasteries built by Buddhist countries from Thailand to Germany. Pokhara is built around a sunrise at Sarankot, with the full Annapurna skyline visible on a clear morning, and an afternoon on Phewa Lake. Chitwan runs at full board from the lodge, with the park’s wildlife, the Tharu village, and a canoe trip on the Rapti filling the days.

What it feels like on the ground

The pace shifts from cultural sightseeing in the valley to early starts and walking in Lumbini, to lake-level calm in Pokhara, and finally to jungle rhythm at Chitwan. Days are full but not rushed. Internal flights replace long drives, which keeps the journey manageable for travellers who would find a road circuit tiring.

Practical notes

No particular fitness is needed. The Sarankot sunrise involves an early start but minimal walking. Lowland Chitwan can be hot from April onwards. Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) offer the best balance of clear mountain views in Pokhara and comfortable temperatures in the lowlands. The monsoon months can cancel internal flights at short notice.

On the banks of the Bagmati, the body is dipped three times into the river before cremation, so that the cycle of reincarnation may be brought to an end. Climb the hill to the temple of Gorakhnath, then descend to the Guheswari Temple.
