Mardi Himal is the short Annapurna trek for travellers who want altitude and close mountain views without committing to a longer route. Seven days run from Pokhara up through rhododendron forest to High Camp at 11,811 feet, with an optional day excursion towards Mardi Himal Base Camp for the close views of Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III. The route works on its own or as an extension to a cultural tour of the Kathmandu Valley.
A short trek with a real summit feel
From Kande the trail climbs to Australian Camp at 6,758 feet, then on through forest to Low Camp and up above the tree line to High Camp. The High Camp itself sits on a ridge with Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Fishtail close enough to feel within reach, and a regular pattern of cloud rolling in below by mid-morning. The Base Camp excursion is the trek’s hardest day: steep, vertiginous in places, four hours each way to the actual base camp with views of Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III.

What it feels like on the ground
Walking days are shorter than on the longer treks but the gradients are steeper. Lodges along the route are simple but well-run, with limited capacity. The descent on the final day is a sustained four hour drop to the road head, with the first hour on dirt road, which can be hard on the knees.

Practical notes
Beginner to intermediate fitness is enough for the main route; the Base Camp excursion needs reasonable hill-walking experience and a head for steep ground. Altitude can be felt at High Camp at 11,811 feet but the gradual ascent limits serious effects. Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the recommended seasons. Walking poles are particularly useful on the descent.
