Spring & Autumn

Poon Hill is the most walked short trek in the Annapurna foothills, and it earns the traffic. Five days of walking deliver a sunrise from a ridge at 10,531 feet with Fishtail, the Annapurna range, and Dhaulagiri lined up across the horizon, a climb through rhododendron forest that flowers red in spring, and a finish in the Gurung village of Ghandruk. The eleven-day version frames the trek with the cultural sites of the Kathmandu Valley at either end.

The trek itself

From the trailhead at Nayapul the route climbs to Tikhedhunga, then up to Ghorepani at 9,429 feet through forest that turns spectacular when the rhododendrons are in bloom. The Poon Hill morning involves a pre-dawn climb to the viewpoint, followed by a return for breakfast and the walk on to Tadapani and Ghandruk. The trail uses stone steps for much of its length, which is easier on the knees going up than coming down.

What it feels like on the ground

Walking days are four to six hours with sustained climbs rather than long flat sections. Lodges along the route are well-developed for the volume of trekkers and offer hot showers, charging points, and a wide menu. The Poon Hill morning is cold; layered clothing and a warm hat make a real difference.

Practical notes

Beginner level fitness is enough, but the climb to Ghorepani and the dawn ascent to Poon Hill are both steep. Altitude is rarely a serious concern at this height. The best seasons are spring (March to May), when the rhododendrons flower, and autumn (September to November), when skies are at their clearest. Proper boots, walking poles, and a warm layer for the Poon Hill morning are essential.
