Year-round
This is the gentlest of the Nepal trekking options and the one most often chosen by travellers who want to walk in the country without committing to a high-altitude route. The trek follows the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, looking down into the bowl on one side and out towards the Himalayan range on the other, with overnight stops in villages that see far fewer visitors than the Annapurna or Everest regions.
A walking circuit, not a climb
The route runs from Sundarijal up to Chisapani, along the ridge to Nagarkot at 7,218 feet, then down through Dhulikhel and on to Namo Buddha, where the night is spent at the monastery. The final day brings in Panauti, one of the oldest Newar towns, at the confluence of three rivers. The full circuit involves no altitude above 7,500 feet, which makes it suitable for travellers who want the feel of a trek without the acclimatisation days, helicopter insurance, or thinning air.

What it feels like on the ground
Walking days run four to six hours on well-defined paths. Lodges are simple but adequate; expect twin rooms, shared bathrooms, and home-cooked dal bhat in the evenings. The pace is unhurried, and the route passes through small farming villages where life runs at its own rhythm. The monastery night at Namo Buddha is the quiet centrepiece.

Practical notes
Reasonable general fitness is enough; no trekking experience is required. Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) give the clearest views, but the trek can be walked year-round outside the heaviest weeks of the monsoon. Proper walking shoes, a light daypack, and layered clothing are the only specific gear required.

Namo Buddha and Panauti, return to Kathmandu
Morning at Namo Buddha Monastery. The site is associated with Prince Mahasattva, believed to be a former incarnation of Buddha Shakyamuni. Walking in the forest with his brothers, the prince encountered a starving tigress unable to feed her cubs. His brothers went away, but in an act of compassion he gave himself to the tigress. When his brothers returned, they found only bones and hair. The stupa is said to have been built on those remains.
Drive to Panauti, set at the confluence of three rivers: the Roshi, the Punyamati, and the Lilawati. A month-long festival is held once every twelve years at Triveni Ghat, where all three rivers meet. Panauti, or Panoti, is also the name of the goddess of troubles. On to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
